What a headache. Does anyone know how to convert a 900 MB avi into a smaller file size with same quality? It just looses too much color and quality.
Are there any speical programs out there designed for that purpose?
I record a video in fraps. Only 30 secs but i cannot get it to shrink down wihtout losing quality.
Its really ticking me off.

how long it is? is the 900mb uncompressed or has it been compressed yet? coz if you compress it again for a second time youll loose even more quality. You need to have the uncompressed footage then compress it. Compression tutorial using XviD : www.chopshopservers.com/education/video_editing_tutorial_by_commodore/index.html#compressThis tutorial uses a bitrate of 2000 tho, but i usually have to use abit higher then that. Ive been using that tutorial for years and has always worked nicely. Remember, whatever resolution you captured the footage with is the resolution you compress it in. If you change it higher/smaller youll loose quality. I would love to help making the movies with you but as you know its impossible as sending uncompressed footage to each other would take ages lol. Edit: from the games movies ive made to achieve good quality you always look for a movie which once compressed is about 20/30mb per minute. Another thing, its very hard to get good quality when using Fraps when it captures the footage is not totally uncompressed, fraps adds its own codec through it. So when you go to compress it at the end you have basically compressed the movie twice which loses quality.

WinAviVideo Converter is a freeware and it is just simple to use. The results are very good and you can choose between some formats, as .avi, .mpg, .wmv...
I usually use .wmv because it is enough quality and very very very bit weight.
