Rfactor is at least as addictive as the old Microprose F1 games from the 90's - but I can't see myself ever being competetive (and I'm talking single player here).
I've completely gimped the A.I. by notching it all the way down to 75%. I've pretty much stuck to the same track, Sepang, and using a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2, the best I can do with the default setup is 1:37.800, while the computer's best guy is consistently pulling off laps at around 1:34 - which is practically a 4 second difference! And this is playing at the lowest A.I. setting possible.
I'm a bit confused here, because when I pull off a lap that's around 1:37 I'm pretty much driving on the edge of my seat the whole way. A lap that's in the 1:37 range is pretty much a perfect lap. If I make even the smallest off errors, I know that the lap won't be under 1:38.
So what gives?
Are the default setups pretty much hopless? Is it not possible to drive well using a Rumblepad? Or do I just plain suck?
I've watched a lot of people's laps on Utube, and I'd say that, at least appearence-wise, these people aren't driving all that much better than I am. One guy, however, over at Rfactorcentral claims he can drive a 1:30 lap at Sepang.
1:30!
Ho-lee! That's eight seconds faster than my very best time! If I could improve by even two seconds I'd be delighted.
(Did I mention, by the way, that this thing is worse than crack? I might have to remove this baby from my hard drive if I continue to spend this much time playing. I keep on saying to myself, just one more lap... then pow, suddenly it's two o'clock in the frickin' morning. It's almost... almost... as good as sex.)
